Equity protector for MT5 without a VPS: cloud vs Expert Advisor
What an equity protector does
An equity protector watches your account equity and, when it falls to a level you set, closes your positions. Good ones also cancel pending orders and stop new trades for the rest of the day. The goal is simple: one bad day should not be able to grow into a much worse one.
On MT5 there are two common ways to get this. One is an Expert Advisor (EA) that runs inside the MetaTrader terminal. The other is a cloud service that connects to your account from outside. Both can work. They fail in different ways, so it helps to know which weakness you are choosing.
The terminal problem
An EA is code that runs inside a terminal. If the terminal is not running, the EA is not running. That means your protection depends on your computer being on, awake, online and logged in to the right account, every hour your positions are open.
This is fine while you sit at the desk. It is risky when you leave trades open overnight, travel, or let a laptop go to sleep. Windows updates, power cuts and dropped Wi-Fi all switch the protection off without warning.
Option 1: run the EA on your own computer
- Cost: nothing extra.
- Speed: fast, because the EA sees every price tick in the terminal.
- Weakness: it stops whenever your computer or connection stops.
- Best for: traders who only hold trades while they are at the screen.
Option 2: run the EA on a VPS
- A virtual private server is a remote computer that stays on. You install MT5 and the EA there and leave it running. Some platforms and brokers offer built-in hosting for this.
- Cost: a monthly fee, plus the time to set it up and keep it updated.
- Weakness: you still manage a terminal. If it is logged out, frozen, or the EA is removed from the chart, protection stops. You also need to check it from time to time.
- Best for: traders who already run EAs and are comfortable maintaining a server.
Option 3: a cloud service with no terminal
- A cloud service connects to your broker account through a connection provider and watches it from its own servers. You do not install anything in MT5.
- Cost: usually a subscription.
- Weakness: you share your MT5 trading password with the service, and the account is reached from a cloud location. There can be brief gaps during maintenance or provider outages, and a close may take a few seconds.
- Best for: traders who want protection that runs with every device switched off.
How to choose
Ask yourself where your risk actually comes from. If you only lose control while you are at the screen, an EA on your own machine may be enough. If you hold trades while away, or run automated strategies overnight, you need something that keeps running: a VPS or a cloud service.
Then check your broker's and, if relevant, your prop firm's rules. Some firms restrict third-party software, VPS use, or logins from other IP addresses. Whatever you choose, test it on a demo account first: set a tiny limit, let it trigger, and confirm that it closes everything and stops new trades.

Where LossGuard helps
LossGuard is a cloud option. You connect your MT5 account with the server name, login and trading password, and set your rules on our website. LossGuard watches the account from our servers, so it keeps working with your phone and computer off and no VPS to maintain. When your daily loss limit is hit, it closes all positions, cancels pending orders and locks the day until your reset. LossGuard also works with cTrader accounts.
The trading password can trade but cannot withdraw money, and it is stored encrypted. No tool can guarantee how a close fills in a fast market. If you trade a prop firm account, check your firm's rules on third-party tools and cloud connections before connecting.

FAQ
Does an equity protector EA work if my computer is off?
No. An EA runs inside the MT5 terminal, so it stops when the terminal stops. To keep it running you need a computer that stays on, such as a VPS.
Is a cloud service slower than an EA?
Often slightly. An EA reacts on each tick inside the terminal, while a cloud service may take a few seconds to close. In return it does not depend on any terminal staying open.
Can I use both?
You can, as long as they do not fight each other. Set the EA and the cloud limit to the same or nearby levels and test on a demo account first.
